February is Grapefruit Month! To help you celebrate, here is everything you need to know about this delicious fruit.
What is grapefruit?
Grapefruit is a citrus fruit that gets its name because it grows in grape-like bunches. It is segmented on the inside, similar to an orange, but larger – and the flavour is tarter.
Grapefruits come in many varieties, both seedless and seeded, although the skins are always yellow; the variation tends to be the colour of the flesh, which can range from yellowish-white to red.
Nutritionists highly prize grapefruits, as they believe they are full of vitamin C and fibre.
Five facts about grapefruit you didn’t know!
It’s no wonder there is a month celebrating the humble grapefruit, as they are quite an interesting fruit. Did you know:
- The grapefruit is a hybrid of the orange and pomelo fruit and was first bred in Barbados in the 18th century and was given the name “the forbidden fruit.”
- The ruby red grapefruit was discovered in Texas, USA, and was the first variety of grapefruit to receive a US patent.
- Grapefruit trees can grow to around 50 feet tall.
- China ranked as the country with the highest grapefruit production in 2021, followed by Vietnam and Mexico.
- You can remove some of the sour flavours of the grapefruit by cooking it first.
